Children's Age-Appropriate Language

I’m struggling with my WIP (and who isn’t?), trying to keep my story child speaking age-appropriate childrenese. The child, Willie, lives in the 1930's, the product of a poor farming family, none of whom are educated beyond the eighth grade. Their language is rather plain. To make things worse(for me), the story is told from Willie’s POV, and he grows older with the progression of the novel.

My daughter who happens to be a dog

newborn MollyMost of you know I'm crazy about my dog.  My older puppy, Sissy, was as mucha part of my family as my daughter.  Our new puppy Molly, who will be 2 in September, has chewed and barked and snuggled her way into our family and is now completely ensconced.

A Bunny Horror Story

Rabbit, am I angry. The cruelty of the act makes me shiver.  Just think, yesterday we had so much fun and then they go and do this to me.  I’ll be the laughing stock.  My brothers and sisters, not to mention Jasper and the rest of the guys, will rib me about this for years. Humans can be so cruel.

Well, let me start from the beginning.  My name is Buddy, Buddy de Bunny.  This is my story of horror and shame.

My dog, Holly Ruth, aka Marley

O.K., Dennis, this is a topic I can get my teeeth into.

I've always had pets: dogs, cats, goldfish, a duck, a turtle, ad nauseum. Most were beings that lived their lives just as they should. Cats being cats, and dogs being dogs...you know what I mean.

But Holly Ruth was memorable. I was an Avon Lady at the time, and one of my customers had picked up a puppy in an industrial area who looked lost. She was looking for a soft heart to take the gangly pup in. What could I do? She was a customer, I took the dog.

My Pets

This week, the theme I've chosen for the blog is our pets.  You can pick any funny story, antidote, memory, or whatever as a base to your post.  This does not exclude the fact that you can even write how they may have affected your writing.

April What?

Believe it or not, I got a couple shocking events this past weekend.  While watching the drawings for that $91M Powerball jackpot, I discovered I had four numbers and the Powerball number on my ticket.  Then I got this phone call about a proposal.

I hope you know where I am heading with this.  That’s right, the theme for this week is about “April Fool’s Day.”  Do you have a funny story or memory about a prank you may have pulled or may have been pulled on you?

Old Characters, New Names and Traits

I am just starting to write a paranormal series about ghosts.  I had written a story at the age of thirteen which had a charming, handsome yet frightening villain.  However, he was not a ghost, but he did have dark and evil powers.  My ideas of that same character have come back, but he is a ghost this time.  He is also my hero instead of the villain.  The story will also be much better than the one I wrote at such a young age.  I knew nothing about writing then.  Not only has the story changed but also my writing.  I have learned so much within

Journaling

With my apologies to Dennis, I am going to write about  journaling this week, instead of what's old/what's new. (It's late and my brain is taking the easy path.)

The "Dear Diary" days were my first attempt and I actually still have the scanty entries about my latest crushes. I was always disappointed at the end of the year that my life was not exciting enough to write about. "I had a fight with Mom today..." didn't do it.

Something Old, Something New

Hello everyone, this is Dennis Clarkston coming to you live from Natchitoches.  This week I have chosen as the theme: "Something New and Something Old."  What I would like you to think about are what new and/or old things or events have occurred and/or have resurfaced within the last three to five weeks.
